Do the little things well - Day 15
Today in the Dan Go email there was a quote that I really liked:
“In the fixed mindset, everything is about the outcome. If you fail—or if you’re not the best—it’s all been wasted. The growth mindset allows people to value what they’re doing regardless of the outcome."
- Carol S. Dweck from the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success
For a very long time I've had a fixed mindset.
I can't just run to be fit I have to run to be a marathoner, and a Boston Qualifying Marathoner at that.
If I don't lose 25lbs in the next 10 days I'm a failure.
If I eat any type of treat there is no point in even trying to have a better diet. It won't work.
This mentality has limited my ability to be successful because I usually quit before I can even see results. I've started to really learn that I needed a mindset shift in order to improve my ability to feel successful and feel GOOD about myself.
My small efforts every day are making a difference.
One thing that I've used to help me in my efforts is a daily weigh in. By tracking my weight every day it gives me some insights into my efforts for the upcoming day.
My weight went up? Well, maybe don't eat that second dessert today. I stayed the same? That's a pretty good day? Weight went down? Do I want to see that happen again today? Or was it too aggressive.
By doing this I can make decisions that help me accomplish my goals. When I'm equipped with information I can feel good about the decisions I'm making. Feeling good gives me motivation to continue.
Wins for the day:
- I took 45 minutes during the day to go on a walk with my middle child. Healthy and important to developing a good relationship with him.
- I knew the dinner we were having was one that I tend to overeat on. Having this in mind I put time during dinner into feeding my infant, which kept me occupied, and I intentionally took smaller bites and put my fork down between bites. By extending the time at the table without having to eat I was able to leave dinner feeling satisfied with what I had eaten.
"Enjoy the satisfaction that comes from doing little things well." - H. Jackson Brown Jr.
